Curing Celiac Disease Using Holistic Naturopathic Techniques

Celiac disease affects around 3,000,000 people in the United States, and this disease becomes more prevalent each year. As with practically all modern epidemics, lifestyle and diet are very closely related to it. About a year ago, we encountered a lady from WikiAnswers who was suffering with celiac disease. She had undergone multiple surgeries, and had spent years taking antibiotics (God only knows how much money was spent). At the time, we were not running a magazine, health show, or health-related website, so we did not publish our research about this disease. By publishing our research now, we hope to help such people. Please let us know if you are one of those people, because we love hearing from our readers, and from people we have been able to help.

Celiac disease needs not be as horrible as the medical establishment portrays it to be. Celiac disease is easily treatable, and completely curable, with minimal cost and trouble. The rate of recovery will be dependent upon the severity of the case, and how religiously the patient adheres to the treatment protocol. With proper treatment, it is estimated to take between one and five years for a complete recovery, but vast improvements in a patient's quality of life can be expected much sooner. We have seen a full recovery that required much less than a year.

What Is Celiac Disease?

In the intestinal tract there are living microbes. The good bacteria are called flora, and the harmful bacteria are called candida (ie. yeast). In health, the candida should be in the minority, and should usually be overrun by the flora. Flora keeps the yeast in-check in a healthy individual. However, this ideal state is not common nowadays. With celiac disease, there is often so much candida (yeast overgrowth) in the intestinal tract that the immune system begins attacking the intestinal tract itself, because this part of the body has been detected as dangerously toxic. Celiac disease is this panic response by the immune system. For people suffering with it, starchy (glutenous) foods are especially aggravating to their already panicked immune systems. These foods are likely to trigger hyper-immune responses causing extreme irritation and spasms. The disease makes the digestion of fats especially difficult.

Because the immune systems are so over driven in celiac patients, their risks of developing other serious heath problems, including cancers, are increased exponentially. Celiac victims are at an especially high risk of developing other serious health problems if they are trying to suppress its symptoms with pharmaceuticals. Therefore, eliminating celiac disease naturally will yield far reaching benefits into the future.

Celiac disease (celiac sprue, or gluten sensitive enteropathy) is incorrectly described as an "autoimmune disorder" by the allopathic medical establishment. There is actually nothing wrong with the autoimmune system in such cases, because the autoimmune system is doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect the vital organs from toxins and pathogens. We should, in fact, thank God for such "autoimmune disorders".

The medical monopoly is correct about attributing it to the small intestine. In our bodies, the small intestine is responsible for the absorption of food nutrients. When someone with celiac disease ingests foods that contain gluten, the body produces antibodies that attack the small intestine, and in particular, the villi. As you read further, you will learn that the body has good (even life-saving) reasons for doing this.

The villi are tiny hair-like projections that line the small intestine, which siphon nutrients into the blood stream. Without healthy villi, a body is unable to absorb the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals it needs, regardless of how much is eaten, or how high the quality of foods are. Over time, the nutrient deprivation caused by an untreated case of celiac disease inevitably leads to malnutrition and secondary health problems.

The cause of celiac disease is 'officially' unknown, but it is typically seen after crises which stress a body's flora and immune system, such as, after a pregnancy, surgery, severe emotional crisis, or pharmaceuticals. These causes seem appropriate from what we know about celiac disease, even if a cause and effect relationship is not 'scientific' enough for the medical establishment, any more than taking responsibility for what they have done to us.

Curing celiac disease depends on repopulating the intestinal tract with helpful flora microbes. They will aid in digestion; returning nutrients to the body again, and they will cripple the destructive yeast. Regardless of how much one eats, the continual condition of yeast overgrowth will leave a person malnourished, low in oxygen, low in energy, susceptible to infections, and full of toxins.

How History Was Ignored and Rewritten

By the late 1940s, Dr. Sidney Valentine Haas was well-known for his treatment of celiac patients with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, a dietary plan that eliminates the indigestible (to a celiac patient) processed carbohydrates in grains, sugars, and homogenized milk products. Without constant aggravations from these carbohydrates, the intestine will heal itself within as little as a year, relieving all sign and symptoms of celiac and other intestinal disorders.

Despite great success with his patients and some acclaim, Dr. Haas' theory of celiac disease was overruled by a 1952 Lancet report (based on only 10 test subjects), which suggested that gluten protein intolerance might be the "real culprit" of celiac disease. Researcher Elaine Gottschall concluded that over simplicity was an attractive factor for the medical community's linking of celiac disease with gluten intolerance, which sadly continues to the present day.

Gluten intolerance is hardly enough to explain celiac disease, since not all symptoms disappear when gluten is eliminated from the diet. In some cases, avoiding gluten alleviates many of the most troubling symptoms, but there is no healing in the small intestine, making the patient highly prone to having additional problems at a later date. As seen with most diseases, this provides another example of the medical establishment simplistically treating symptoms, without making a good faith effort to cure. Gottschall explained that the allopathic regimen does not result in healing the intestinal wall, but she was, of course, ignored. Celiac patients who avoid all gluten still continue to demonstrate deformed cells in the intestinal wall -- an unmistakable indication that something in the body is still out of balance -- that there is still a state of dis-ease.

When a person successfully avoids all processed (chemically engineered) starches and the polysaccharides (complex sugars) which aggravate celiac (and various other intestinal conditions), his body's intestinal wall will actually heal itself. Cells will be healthy, and test normal after a period of one to five years on the diet.

According to the research of Dr. Haas, and his son, Dr. Merrill P. Haas, the cause of celiac disease is not gluten, but chemically bastardized sugars. Certain complex carbohydrates have a structure making them difficult for the digestive system to break down. These disaccharide and polysaccharide sugars are left unabsorbed in the intestine, feeding bacterial overgrowth and fueling inflammatory damage to the intestinal wall.

How To Cure Celiac Disease

Treatment goals are:

  • Suppress candida (yeast) overgrowth
  • Stimulate healthy intestinal flora
  • Stimulate intestinal repair

These things can be accomplished merely through nutritional changes, but herbal supplements will help to greatly accelerate the process. Items should only be purchased from a health food store, because the supplements found in major retailers cannot be trusted.

The treatment suggestions below may seem overwhelming at first glance, but the options we see as critical are marked with a star (*).

Herbally Healing The Intestinal Tract

  • Licorice Root *
  • Apple Pectin is used to remove unwanted toxins and heavy metals (mercury, lead, aluminum, etc.), lower cholesterol, and reduce the side effects of exposure to radiation. In fact, it was used after Chernobyl to remove radioactive waste from victims. In addition, apple pectin is another good source of soluble fiber. It has the ability to form a gel which can bind water and toxins together, while at the same time also bulking the stool and carrying the toxins out of the body.
  • Marshmallow root controls and sooths inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal. Helps with the candida problem.
  • MSM is concentrated in connective tissues. It promotes structural repair.
  • Aloe Vera extract has the ability to move deep into damaged tissues to promote repair. This may include a slight increase in bowel movements.
  • Mucin (Sialic Acid, N-Neuraminic Acid).
  • Many people with Celiac disease have claimed that adding Paprika to foods has helped them substantially.
  • Dandelion - can be used in tea form (better absorption)

Killing Candida / Yeast

  • Stop all hormone therapies, and especially do not take birth control pills. Candida thrives in progesterone. *
  • Avoid all products with soy. *
  • Avoid canola oil. *
  • Colloidal silver would be extremely beneficial in speeding up the process, especially in the beginning.
  • Garlic is an anti-microbial and will help fight and kill bacteria, fungi and infections in the system. Use copious amounts: as much as you can stand.
  • Hydrogen peroxide. Mix half a teaspoon of 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide in 8oz water and drink several times a day. Skip this step if you have ulcers.
  • Grapefruit seed extract
  • Use only gray-colored sea salt from a health food store, and avoid toxic table salt. Do not trust the white "sea salt" found at most retailers, because real sea salt is never white in nature. In fact, only buy supplements from regular retailers (instead of health food stores) when you are really desperate. We avoid places like GMC, as well, because we have found them to be chemical industry prostitutes too. The sodium will make your body more alkaline, as well as help it move fluids, which is necessary for the removal of toxins.
  • Cayenne pepper. This can be found in capsule form.
  • Oregano Oil
  • Chamomile
  • Wormwood
  • Consume a tiny amount of extra virgin, cold pressed, coconut oil daily, if it can be tolerated. If it cannot be tolerated, then begin using it when celiac disease becomes less severe.

Changes To Your Diet

  • The diet is: no sugar, lay off alcohols (especially beer), no mushrooms, limit yeast, limit caffeine as much as possible. You may eat meat, vegetables, whole wheat, non-homogenized milk products, but it has to be only brown, wholemeal flour, brown rice, whole cream milk, and etc.. They should be organic whenever possible. Do not eat any processed foods. They are mostly "enhanced" sugars, processed vegetable oils, and engineered flours. Avoid all white flours, and white breads. This is critical. *
  • No canned or processed meats. Organic is preferred.
  • No canned or processed vegetables. Organic is preferred.
  • Do not attempt to eat, or cleanse with, any undersea vegetation, such as kelp or seaweed.
  • Avoid commercially made mayonnaise.
  • Yogurt - It will stimulate the existing beneficial intestinal flora, and add good bacterial reinforcements. Use only plain yogurt without flavorings or sugars. Organic yogurt is best. Yogurt will also suppress the bad bacteria at the same time. Yogurt is absolutely critical. Use two tablespoons five times a day if possible. Stir each time before use, and replace within a week. *
  • Food-based multivitamins containing vitamins A, E, folic acid, and the mineral zinc participate in beneficial antioxidant functions to reduce oxidative stress in the cellular lining of the gut. In this manner, they assist in the overall repair process. Some of the gut barrier functions, such as IgA secretion, can be enhanced by these vitamins. Remember - Food Based.
  • You need to make your body as alkaline as possible. You should read over our pH food chart.
  • We recommend several glasses of lemonade or pineapple juice per day, because the acids in these juices will actually counteract the acids of the body after the digestive process. The juices themselves have naturally occurring sugars which are more beneficial to flora than yeast. If sugar is used to sweeten, then use only evaporated cane juice crystals (If it says "pure" - it's not). The amount of sugar needed can be greatly reduced by adding a pinch of baking soda.
  • Avoid all potato-based foods. *
  • Pure fruit juice in moderation is okay to quell cravings for sweets. Make sure it is pure. It must have no added sugar, or high-fructose corn syrup.
  • Avoid all artificial sweeteners.
  • Avoid fluoride, and apply iodine transdermally. In fact, we recommend drinking only spring water, and using a non-fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Sulfur Proteins and Omega-3 - Supplement with essential fatty acids, such as those from flax seed oil (transforms into Omega-3 during digestion) in combination with foods containing sulfur proteins (cysteine or methionine) such as yogurt, eggs, codfish, sesame paste, nuts, garlic, cottage cheese, and onions. Omega-3 works best when combined with sulfur proteins. Research the Budwig Diet for information about this therapeutic, and wildly successful anti-cancer diet. *
  • Avoid microwaved foods, because they are nutritionally depleted, and people with celiac disease are already somewhat malnourished.

Cautionary Notice and Conclusions

If you proceed rapidly with the suggestions above, it is possible that you will actually feel sicker before you feel better. This is because the yeast cultures will release toxins as they die -- literally rotting inside you, and releasing ammonia compounds. Therefore, it is important to have a high fluid intake, especially if you feel sick or weak. We recommend green tea as an alternative stimulating drink, and perhaps some ginseng. Fluids will aid the body in expelling the dead critters. Feeling sicker initially is often a side effect of alternative medicines, because alternative medicines treat the causes of illnesses, instead of merely treating ("managing") symptoms, as is the case with the medical monopoly.

We noticed in our research a familiar pattern. Many of the sites discussing celiac disease, and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet are full of disinformation. We also noticed that most of these sites are untraceable by 'whois' lookups, and various other Internet tracking methods. This can be no accident. Perhaps these sites are 'sponsored' by the American Medical Association, or a partner organization abroad. Take for instance, some of them advise readers to avoid yogurt, which is at the core of actually curing this condition. Again, this disinformation cannot possibly be accidental, because the particulars of this diet are already well known and documented. In fact, the phrase 'Specific Carbohydrate Diet' is trademarked, to prevent this sort of behavior. The obvious goal is to deceive us into remaining sick, and completely dependent upon their system. We work tediously to separate the disinformation intended to keep us as perpetual 'consumers' of the medical establishment, because they want our diseases to be 'managed', like a form of slavery.

    Why is it a problem to have seaweed or Kelp? My son who is Celiac was diagnosed with hypothyroidism because his TSH was rising as high as 11. After taking bladderack for 1 month his TSH level dropped to a little over 4.

    We are happy you found a natural method for helping your son. Few parents nowadays are willing to spend time doing the necessary research to improve the health of their families in a safe, non-chemical manner. Bravo to you, Sir!

    As far as seaweed and kelp are concerned, we should have realized that our position on these would cause some confusion, so please accept this apology for that, and this explanation. By the way, we need readers like you to challenge our positions, because it ultimately helps us to do our jobs better.

    We already know that both seaweed and kelp are all natural, and that both are known for producing various health benefits. We have never disputed these things.

    Our issue is one of safety. The problem is that both seaweed and kelp are bottom-feeders, which are known to readily absorb large amounts of heavy metals and toxins. This is their job in fact -- to clean the smut from the ocean floors.

    As someone equally interested in health, I am sure that you can appreciate our extreme caution concerning any treatments that are likely to pollute patients with accumulative heavy metals. I have faith that you already know the long term implications.

    An exception would be farm raised kelp and seaweed, but this is difficult to verify from a product label, and purity would still require untainted conditions. We would have no problems whatsoever with organic kelp and seaweed grown in pristine conditions; but as things stand, we have to err on the side of caution. We believe it would be irresponsible to recommend either, due to our risk assessment.

    The problem with oxygen is free radicals, and they are only a problem with lack of nutrition. As long as you're getting certain vitamins (anti-oxidants), you will be fine. If you're concerned, the hydrogen peroxide was not marked as a critical treatment, so you can skip on that.

    Oxygen is only a problem with malnutrition, but that's actually fairly common nowadays.

    Is this diet necessary for life, or only for a few years....could you ever eat, for example, potato products again? I have celiac disease and am interested in trying this diet. Is there any more information on it...books, etc?

    I am interested in this diet. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease 3 years ago and I have always felt that I was fighting a candida condition due to years of too many antibiotics.

    This change in diet sounds interesting but looking at it, I am not sure how I would plan to eat each day. It's already been hell trying to stick to a gluten free diet.

    I was "glutened" by accident at a restaurant in Tacoma last week when I was served a regular salmon alfredo dish and my sister got the gluten free one. I was halfway through the meal when we realized what had happened. I've had diarrhea every days since for the past week.

    There has got to be an easier way to plan to eat right and safe.

    People generally have much better results with plain, organic yogurt. Probiotics shouldn't hurt you, but we have noticed that people usually have very little success with them.

    I have noticed that many probiotics do not seem to do much, but one I have found that is really good is Prescript Assist, which has benefited me greatly.

    Actually, yogurt is a bad thing, it doesn't do you any good. All those good things they've said about yogurt is a myth. It does nothing but feed the bad bacteria.Doctors actually encourage eating organic yogurt because they too know it does the patient no good.

    Because the problem is not restricted to merely gluten intolerance. The condition has not been correctly explained by the mainstream medical establishment.

    I've been following pretty much the kind of diet you prescribe, an anti-candida diet. I am under the care of a naturopathic doctor.

    I have no idea why you say it is okay to eat whole wheat! If I so much of get a CRUMB of wheat, I'll be suffering from diarrhea for days.

    Thanks for this highly informative article.

    Most, if not all, of my previous research into Celiac disease has suggested it is considered to primarily be the result of a genetic disorder, perhaps combined with one or more other factors which trigger the disease.

    This article on Wikipedia gives a pretty good overview of the consensus view of celiac.

    I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this.

    My wife has celiac and suffers round the clock with various symptoms, despite a gluten-free diet for many years now. So we are very interested in finding a way to cure it, although she'd been led to believe it was genetic and therefore incurable.

    On one part of the article it says no dairy, but then at the bottom it say you can have milk based products??
    I seem to have worse reactions with my disease when I eat dairy.
    Should I eat or shouldn't I eat dairy?

    :shock: since I was very young I suffered from severe bathroom trots. when eating biscuits and sausge gravy and milk for breakfast I had to leave the table to run to the bathroom, sometimes twice before I could eat the meal.I grew up on fried chicken, lots of flour everyday so I had to hold it in on the buss ride to school then run to the rest room as fast as I could. and about everyday I was in the sick room lying down with abdomen pain, and had low blood E times in the 5 grade.now I am 50 and things haven't changed much, I live on anti diehiaiea meds and have bad body swelling and weight gain. I would like to try this diet and try to heal myself. or at least suffer less. do you think this will help me ? DENICE

    I have eliminated dairy from my diet as I have long feared it to cause me trouble. Would introducing yoghurt back into my diet possibly be harmful?

    I'm sure I could simply try it myself but I'm wondering what your input would be.
