Iodine Deficiencies

Written by Sarah Cain
PrintE-mail
UPDATE: Due to some recent recommendations by rogue members of the alternative health care community, we have written the report, Why You Should Never Orally Consume Synthetic Iodine.  In regard to the new toxic povidone iodine being sold in regular retailers, We recommend reading, The Conspiracy To Poison Alternative Medicine: Choosing The Right Iodine and Avoiding Poisonous Povidone Iodine Found In Most U.S. Retailers.

People who have embraced modern eating habits are often negligent about their required nutrients.  Many never consider the link between their diet and their fatigue or insomnia.  Your body produces negative warnings reactions when it has too much or too little of any given thing.  For example, too much dairy may cause migraines, and too many sugars can eventually contribute to obesity.  Yet in moderation, both of these can actually be beneficial.

Most of us lack vital nutrients like the B vitamins, which are found in most raw vegetables, but are weakened when they are cooked, and they are absolutely destroyed whenever they are microwaved.  Because of our modern eating habits, a food-based vitamin B supplement is usually beneficial.  A greater problem is that everything we eat is deficient in the proper nutrients and minerals, due in large part to chemical fertilizers.  This effect of synthetic fertilizers was discovered about 70 years ago, and yet most of us still have no idea that we are repeatedly damaging our soils; and with it, our health.

After doing our own research, we decided to test whether we were iodine deficient.  Iodine is a chemical element which is found in trace amounts throughout the human body.  Is the basis of all nutrients in your body, since the cells need it to regulate their metabolism.  Without it, people are known to suffer from swollen glands in the throat, thyroid diseases, increased fluoride toxicity, decreased fertility rates, increased infant mortality rates, sugar regulation problems, and (with severe deficiency) mental retardation.  It has been theorized as a cause of ADHD for newborns of iodine deficient women.

A New York Times Syndicate reports:

"Besides causing unsightly goiters, iodine deficiency slows all the systems of the body: The digestive system becomes sluggish, nails grow more slowly, skin and hair become dry and dull, tendon reflexes stiffen, sensitivity to cold increases, and the pulse slows. Iodine helps form who we are to such an extent that a deficiency can lead to a dulling of the personality, deterioration of attention and memory, increase in irritability due to fatigue and extreme apathy."

The Iodine Speed Test

We initially found that all of us were iodine deficient.  Want to test yourself?  You can place some iodine on your abdomen.  (We use the 2% type.)  Make a circle the size of a silver dollar (or twice the size of a British 50p).  Allow it to dry before covering with clothing.  If it disappears within 12 hours, then you are Iodine deficient.  This test works due to the fact that a body absorbs Iodine at the rate at which it is needed.  We do not pretend to understand the whole process, but it is accurately repeatable.  For instance, whenever a person is ill, iodine will absorb especially rapidly.  We have noticed a 4 to 5 times absorption increase during periods of high stress or illness.  Apply it cautiously, because it will stain almost any surface, and of course, clothing.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

There is a lot of conflicting information on the Internet regarding the application of iodine for those with Hashimoto's, so it is prudent that we comment.  Dosage is especially important in these cases, since an overdose of iodine can cause the thyroid to shut down completely.  However, a small amount of iodine does help this condition.  Problems especially occur for those who take potassium iodide supplements, and those who take internal iodine drops.  However, we have not found any evidence of harm for those who apply iodine transdermally, as we recommend.  Remember that transdermal application allows a body to self-regulate the absorption.

Caution: Do not swallow or take iodine orally, for it is toxic when ingested.  Call a poison control center for more information.  The U.S. National Poison Control Center number is: 1-800-222-1222.

If you feel that you should or must consume iodine orally, then get it through supplementing with red marine algae.  It is the safest natural source for oral iodine supplementation, and other underwater vegetation generally contains toxins such as heavy metals and P.C.B..

If iodine is poisonous, how do you explain the Japanese population consuming more than 12 mg of iodine in their daily diet of sea veggies? If iodine were poisonous, then why is salt iodized? Why don't people die from eating seafood??

    Curious minds want to know.

  • Sarah Cain (H.W. Researcher)
    avatar

As this article points out, most people are deficient in iodine, and should get more of it. However, they should not ingest synthetic iodine that was created in a lab. The Japanese are not drinking bottles of synthetic iodine. They are eating a natural product.

As we also pointed out in this article, iodized salt is made with potassium iodide, not iodine. I hope this helps to clear things up.

First question: In your opinion, for transdermal ingestion of iodine, is Lugol's solution a good choice? If not, what do you recommend?
Second question: If you regard oral ingestion of iodine/iodide as toxic, what of Dr. Brownstein's research that suggests otherwise (except in cases of Hashimoto's)?

  • Thomas Corriher (Managing Editor)

We're not going to comment about Dr. Browstein, which should tell you our opinion. Lugol's is actually a type of iodine instead of a brand, just in case there is any confusion amongst readers about it. It tends to be one of the healthiest formulations. For oral usage, iodide is probably safe (used is breads and etc.). Unfortunately, it is difficult for us mere morals to obtain pure iodide.

The real problem with oral usage, especially in the case of iodine is one of purity. The iodine from typical chemical corporations is hardly the pristine iodine that we find naturally in foods, even though they believe and tell us differently. For instance, green tea is healthy, but green tea mixed with aspartame and aluminum is not.

    avatar

Regarding the difficulty of obtaining Lugol's or pure iodide, yes, I know that in the USA, it's fraught with FDA restrictions. It's easier in Australia where I lived for most of my life. Although there are regulations about the sale of "allowable" quantities, this is only loosely monitored and, as far as I know, seldom enforced.

  • Sandra  - Lugol's iodine taken internally
    avatar

I am so grateful for your article. I just hope I didn't do some irreparable damage to myself and if I stop now taking iodine internally I will be fine. I believed all the health claims about Lugol's iodine and just finished a course of 30ml (ingested orally). I purchased this from a site called regenerativenutrition.com and now wonder what other harmful advise might be on there. Is there anything that I can do to reverse the effects of the ingested iodine? My thyroid is painful now. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism many years ago but never felt any pain and now after taking this iodine(7%) my neck has been quite painful for two days now. I would apreciate any advise. Many thanks in advance.

Fluoride and iodine neutralize one another in the human body, so start drinking lots of tap water. You will be fine soon.

By the way, this can also happen with iodine applied to the skin, but it would take an extreme amount, and a person who is not accustomed to it.

  • valarie  - iosol question
    avatar

i had ingested iosol iodine about four drops per 16 oz. water daily for a week.. i became severely constipated. I stopped using the iosol iodine. Now i am reading about "painting" with iodine. My questions are....(1) can i use the iosol idodine to paint an area? (2) how much and how often do i do this? i have painted an area on the underside of my wrist from side to side and about two inches long and the iodine disappears in less than an hour-hour and half. i have been diagnosed with severe RA and have been taking humira and methotrexate for about two years now. One more question, please, the side effects of sodas/soft drinks/--not diet ones. --thank you for your help....

  • Sarah Cain (H.W. Researcher)
    avatar

Yes, you can use iosol iodine to paint a patch on your skin. Generally, you keep increasing the size of your patch until it takes 12 hours for it to disappear. If it is dissipating every couple of hours, it is fine to add more as soon as it runs out. This is pretty regular among those who drink fluoridated water, or who are exposed to fluoride through the use of pharmaceuticals. We recommend spring/well water.

There are a few problems with regular soft drinks. Firstly, they acidify the body, which makes you more susceptible to disease. Read this article for more on that: The Link Between Body pH and Disease.

Also, high fructose corn syrup leads to heart disease, and of course, obesity. It is almost always produced from GMO corn, which is responsible for chronic diseases and the decline of the bee population. Refined sugars and high fructose corn syrup both lead to diabetes. Evaporated cane juice, on the other hand, is needed to cure it. If all of that wasn't enough, the cans that house soft drinks contain a BPA lining.

Hi okay so I got the iodine and applied it. Does it have to be on the abdomen? or can you just apply it anywhere on the body? It absorbed in less than 5 mins? Its itchy.... by obsorb does that mean that you can no longer see the stain?

  • Sarah Cain (H.W. Researcher)
    avatar

You only need to apply it to the abdomen for the iodine test. You can apply it anywhere. Absorb does mean that there is no longer any sign of iodine on that area (no stain).

Can you possibly elaborate on Atomidine? It is the molecule that has been electified down to a sub atomic particle and it is real Iodine.

    avatar

hi guys, THANKS for spreading TRUTH on so many topics. truly, i thank you.

question... can bladderwrack (in liquid form) be applied topically for iodine absorption? or does it make more sense to apply iodine topically for better absorption/results?

just trying to figure out the best/safest topical (NOT oral) iodine intake.

    thanks!

    Hi
Thanks for all the info on this website, very useful and much appreciated. Just a few questions.
    1. I'm absorbing the iodine pretty quickly, but I'm still not sure what size patch of iodine to put on my skin, any suggestions?

    2. I couldn't find Lugol's Iodine, so I,m using an Iodine Tincture by Ovelle, the ingredients are listed a : Iodine 2.5% w/v, Potassium Iodine 2,5% w/v, Ethanol 90%, Purified water. Is this ok to use or should I order Lugol's instead?

    3. Is Selenium (in tablet form) ok to take along side Iodine, as I have a vague memory of reading somewhere that they shouldn't be taken at the same time?

Thank's once again for your help.

  • Sarah Cain (H.W. Researcher)
    avatar

Hey Mike. Iodine tincture is just fine, as long as you don't put it in your mouth. There is no harm in supplementing with selenium at the same time as using iodine. There were some people who had concerns about this several years ago, but that all seems to have gone now, and people regularly supplement with both. Take care.

I have hypothyroidism, I take Synthroid every day. Would I still benefit from applying Iodine? Do I just apply it to my skin every day?

  • Canadian J  - Thank-you
    avatar

Thank-you for all your very useful info. I'm currently waiting for my ultrasounds on my thyroid and diagnosis, but all my symptons from the past and present tell my I have hypothyroidism. I'm already benifiting from all the info on this site. A thousand thank-you's!!

  • Jen  - Daughter & myself are both Hypothyroid
    avatar

I've been hypothyroid for ~ 17 yrs (I'm now 38). I've been taking Armour thyroid for ~ 3 yrs now and have liked it much better than the synthroid I used to be on. I've always been on 50 mcg synthroid or 60mg Armour. It's never needed changing, even during pregnancies, etc.

Unfortunately, we found out about a yr ago that my daughter (at age 8 y/o) was also hypothyroid. In fact, her levels were 3x higher than they should have been. She's also on Armour thyroid (30mg).

My question is whether or not the topical iodine, thyroid support herbs, diet, & exercise could possibly help either one of us (esp my daughter) to quit having to take the thyroid meds all together?

I really want to help her "cure" her thyroid so that it will work properly for her and not have to take thyroid meds the rest of her life like I have had to.

    Thanks for your time!

  • Sarah Cain (H.W. Researcher)

If both you and your EIGHT-YEAR-OLD daughter are both suffering from hypothyroidism, then you seriously need to re-evaluate your diet AND lifestyle. Especially avoid fluoride. Regardless of what the doctors might say to you, you do not have defective genes. As to your question as to whether our methods will work, you have already tried it your way, and you see the results. You might want to turn things around now, or someday your daughter is going to curse you for it.

  • SB  - hashimotos
    avatar

Could you please explain how to go about using iodine when one has hashimotos? I see that you say use caution, but this is the first I've ever heard of it and don't really know what that means.

You have told other commenters things like try you method: no fluoride, etc. Are you meaning that if we change diet and get ph balanced correctly then the hashimotos will go away?

    Thanks.

  • Mike  - iodine absorption
    avatar

    Hi
I've noticed that if I place iodine on my skin in the morning often by the end of the day most of it is still there and yet if I do the same thing just before I go to sleep, it is absorbed very quickly. Sometimes if I wake up at four in the morning it's all gone! Why do you think there is such a marked difference between daytime and nighttime absorption?
Also I've experimented with night time absoption, putting larger and larger patches on my skin but they still seem to get absorped. By doing this is there any danger of absorbing too much iodine, or will my body just take what it needs?

    Thanks for your help

Can you compare Atomodine, Iodoral, Lugol's, and Iosol? How can these be toxic when so many people take them and have improved their symptoms?? Can you please explain more?

I have not taken any of these yet, because I keep finding conflicting information like this. I HAVE painted with iodine and it causes no changes to my symptoms whatsoever. My body temperature still remains a cold 96-97 degrees! Sometimes I absorb it very quickly and sometimes I don't.

  • Zack

My iodine solution absorbed within 2 hours and 45 minutes! And I even put more then the recommended dollar sized application by accident. I'll continue applying once the last application is gone. Hope this gets rid of the cold feet.

2.5% iodine, 2.5% potassium iodide, 83.7% isopropyl alcohol

Thanks for all the useful information
