Holistically and Naturally Treating Migraine Headaches

This article is intended to give general advice for treating and preventing migraine headaches.  There is nothing simple, fast, or easy in regards to this topic, so we recommend that readers take notes about this article, and we welcome your input.

Contrary to popular belief, migraine headaches do not 'just happen'.  They are either a symptom of a deficiency, or of a toxin; so migraine headaches are always a symptom of something else, and perhaps they should more aptly be considered punishments for bad lifestyles.  The safe, long-term, and effective solution is not pharmaceuticals.  The real solution is eliminating whatever is causing the headaches, but unfortunately, this is rarely easy to discover.  There is seldom a singular cause.  Migraine headaches are caused by a constellation of causes.

Contrary to some misconceptions, migraine headaches are not usually related to head problems.  The root cause of migraine headaches is frequently related to the condition of the gastrointestinal tract, or the heart.  A person merely feels the symptoms in his head.

A lack of magnesium is almost always present in persons experiencing migraine headaches.  Whenever a person is so low in magnesium that a migraine headache is triggered, this same person is at an enormously elevated risk of suffering a heart attack.  The headache is one way for the body to force us to slow down, in fact.  Other problems may develop as well, but none of them are of the seriousness of heart attacks.  Remember that green vegetables (especially organic broccoli and spinach) are your friends.  A teaspoon of pure maple syrup may help by providing a high dose of magnesium and provide a natural sugar for the blood.  Cashew nuts also provide a good dietary source of magnesium.

Unfortunately, when a migraine strikes, it is usually too late to effectively fight with nutrition.  The damage is done, and a person is desperate for fast relief.  For these occasions, we consume what we call "mag packs", which are a powdered compound for making drinks with a high content of magnesium and calcium.  The two minerals work together to improve absorption.  These emergency packets can be found in most health food stores.

Another leading cause of migraine headaches is M.S.G. (monosodium glutamate).  M.S.G. is a brain-attacking neurotoxin, well-known for causing migraine headaches.  A person is particularly prone to experiencing irregular heart rhythms when having an excess of M.S.G. and a deficiency of magnesium. These events can cause sudden heart failure, and are the primary reasons why some high-school athletes mysteriously die of sudden heart failure.  A migraine can be triggered by either the direct attack upon the brain by the M.S.G., or indirectly by its interference of proper heart rhythm.  In either case, its toxicity is transparent.

Almost all Americans are deficient in magnesium, due to their diets of processed foods, and "conventionally" grown vegetables, which are grown in synthetic, fertilizer-depleted soils. Thus, we're not always joking about fast foods and Campbell's soups when we state, that stuff can kill you.  It can. In addition to the magnesium drink powder found in health stores, the amino acid taurine may save you from your headache agony.  (The preceding link elaborates greatly about M.S.G., how it is hidden in foods, and neutralizing it with taurine.)

It is important to know that taurine may save your life during a M.S.G.-induced heart attack, so have some handy.  If it cannot be swallowed, then hold the powder in the mouth for direct absorption through the cheeks.  Follow with a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper after 3-4 minutes.

M.S.G. is not the only toxin that can induce migraine headaches.  Migraine headaches are yet another reason to switch to organic foods.  In particular, artificial sweeteners have a tendency to attack the brain; not just causing pain, but also brain damage, as is also the case of M.S.G..  Aspartame for instance, has been proven repeatedly to directly cause brain tumors, in addition to releasing toxins into the blood, such as formaldehyde, and formic acid (think bee venom).  The chewing gums sold nowadays are much more dangerous than smoking, and are more likely to have terrible immediate consequences.  Safe, old-school chewing gums can be found in most health food stores.  The point herein is that the prevalence of migraine headaches is evidence that most Americans are being terribly poisoned on a regular basis.  Sooner or later, the pain will make you a believer.

Another cause of migraine headaches is inflammation.  This too is usually caused by diet.  Take for instance, the standard homogenized milk found in most retailers.  The process of homogenization produces such unnatural fats within the milk that it actually attacks the arteries (another heart connection), and therefore milk is a major cause of heart disease. This has been exhaustively documented in scientific papers, and equally ignored by the main media.  This once extremely nutritious food has been transformed into something toxic by the chemical industry, and our readers really ought to be seeing the pattern by now.  In fact, the proteins in milk also suppress the absorption of calcium, which leads to problems like osteoporosis in the long term.

Another leading cause of inflammation is the oils used to cook our foods.  One of the biggest problems with cooking oils is that the omega oils are not balanced.  In particular, Americans tend to have a deficiency of omega-3, and an excess of both omega-6 and omega-9.  We used to get significantly more omega-3 in our diets, before processed foods and chemical fertilizers destroyed the value of our foods.  There should be a 1:5 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6, but for the average American, it is a disease-stimulating ratio of 1:15.

This is where the medical establishment took a wrong turn in its guestimations about cholesterol and heart diseases, in falsely placing the blame on healthy natural fats, but this is a topic for another time.

The absolute worst cooking oils are canola, hydrogenated oils, soy (GM, processed, and directly attacks thyroid), and cotton seed (pesticide residue).  All of these cause major inflammation, so in addition to contributing to migraine headaches, they also lead to chronic diseases over an extended period.

Remember that these super headaches are your body trying to warn you, or at least slow until the emergency passes.  Taking chamomile and flax seed oil capsules (omega-3) will help to neutralize some of the inflammation, and they will help a person "sleep it off".  Flax seed oil should be added as a regular dietary supplement, in fact.

Another inflammatory stress is candida yeast inside the intestinal tract.  You can read all about candida in our article, Naturally and Holistically Curing Allergies By Eliminating Candida, but for now, a quick fix is a massive dose of colloidal silver.  In the case of a migraine headache, a quick fix is within 3-4 hours.

Reflexology and pressure point techniques can help alleviate some of the pain from migraine headaches.  This entails gently pinching and applying pressure to the tops of the first three toes of each foot in a massaging motion.  The nerves on the tops of the first three toes are connected to the nerves of the head.  The patient should notice unusually acute soreness in this part of the foot, and there may even be slight pain in the beginning.  Begin with only slight pressure and eventually build to as much force as the patient can tolerate.  Some temporary relief may also be obtained by applying pressure to the cheek bones, temples, or just above the eye sockets (acupressure).  The amount of pressure, and direction of pressure is a matter of trial and error.

Of course, another cause of migraine headaches is stress.  Unfortunately, you must find your own ways of reducing stress and relaxing.

There have been an enormous number of testimonials stating that a small amount of apple cider vinegar everyday combined with a transdermal application of iodine can effectively prevent the overwhelming majority of migraine headaches, if used daily.  The effects of the iodine are easily explainable, since iodine fuels the thyroid, which in turn drives practically every hormone in the body.  We must confess to not fully understand the effects of apple cider vinegar.  No one seems to understand it, but it has a plethora of beneficial effects.  It is an exceptional overall health tonic, regardless of whether one suffers from migraine headaches, or not.  Make special note that white (refined) vinegar has very few health benefits, so we strongly recommend switching to apple cider vinegar for all recipes requiring vinegar.

We recommend taking a broad-spectrum B vitamin supplement that is food based. In fact, the B vitamins can help to quell an ongoing migraine attack.  We also recommend reading our article about how to avoid fake chemical vitamins that do very little.  For intake, it may be necessary to apply a crushed vitamin transdermally on the stomach, with a hot damp cloth and hot water bottle on top, if the vitamin cannot be taken orally.  A small pinch of cayenne and apple cider vinegar may help too, but it is likely to cause a skin burn if left too long.

We recommend removing all sugars from the diet, except natural sugars ("white" sugar and high-fructose corn syrup are out), and remove all refined ("white") carbohydrates.  Overall, stop eating all chemically laced, bleached, and processed foods.  The headaches are essentially warning signs that you are slowly killing yourself, and bleach is one way to do that.  Be advised that you are drinking bleach if you drink tap water, and you may be inhaling it through shower water too.  For bathers, it absorbs though the skin.

Some sources misguidedly report that sunlight is a cause of migraine headaches.  This is contrary to both the facts, and common sense.  Sunlight is not toxic, and it is not disease-causing (technically it does not actually cause skin cancers either).  As is usual from the medical establishment, there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the cause and effect relationships, and the relationships between diseases and symptoms.  A symptom is never the root illness, as the 'experts' consistently purport.  Sunlight is merely a trigger for aggravating the symptoms of a developing migraine headache.  If sunlight were indeed the cause of migraine headaches, then they could be easily treated with darkness.  Darkness only decreases some of the symptoms, indicating that light is merely an aggravating factor.  Stupidity on this topic abounds, and we have found that the establishment does not have a monopoly on it.

Headaches are often caused by, or exasperated by, constricted blood vessels.  Relaxing them may provide relief.  Niacin (vitamin B3) is known for its ability to dramatically dilate the blood vessels, and thereby lower blood pressure.  Niacin has some strange side-effects, so we strongly recommend reading our niacin article before using it.  A pinch of cayenne pepper can sometimes have similar effects.  Taking aspirin during a headache significantly increases the risk of an aneurysm (internal bleeding), whereas niacin actually decreases the risk.

Molds are another source of toxicity, so we recommend that people who are prone to migraine headaches use the highest quality anti-allergen air filters that they can find for their home air conditioning systems.  Reducing humidity in moist areas is also beneficial for limiting the amount of toxic mold spores in the air.  Running the exhaust fan in a bathroom during a shower can greatly reduce moisture problems.

Antibiotics are still based on toxic mold substances, so bear in mind the overall damage that they may be doing to your health, and limit (if not eliminate) pharmaceuticals overall.  Have you bothered to research your pharmaceuticals?  You can be certain that your doctor was not truthful, for he never gave you full disclosure.

Some people have reported improvement after treating migraine headaches with feverfew. We have not yet researched this, but it may be worth a try.

Ginger can be especially helpful for migraine sufferers, because of its ability to relax an uneasy stomach.  If a person is too nauseous to take ginger capsules, then leave some in the mouth for direct blood absorption through the cheeks.  Be forewarned that ginger can trigger a mild depression in women for several hours.

Sometimes a serious long term headache is caused by a spinal misalignment, particularly in the upper neck area.  These headaches can be typically cured by a chiropractor in a matter of minutes.

We recommend supplementing the diet with chlorophyll to everyone, but especially for migraine headache sufferers.

When all else fails, smoking cannabis ("marijuana") is an effective method for numbing both the nausea and the pain, so that a person can "sleep it off".  It is the fastest method of obtaining relief, and it really ought to be recommended by doctors.  This is truly only treating the symptoms, so we recommend it as a last resort, and of course, there are likely legal issues too.  It is wise to obtain it before it is needed, due to the fact that it cannot be purchased in stores.

Finally, you may contact us to investigate the causes (and solutions) of your migraine headaches.  We do not require, expect, or accept payments for our assistance (but feel free to sing us praises).  If you decide to do your own research, then we encourage you to lock onto the topic of inflammation, and include search terms like 'holistic' and 'naturopathic'.  If you do your own research, be sure to avoid Google.  Good alternative information cannot be found through Google, and it is obviously intentional.

You write at the end of your article, "If you do your own research, be sure to avoid Google. Good alternative information cannot be found through Google, and it is obviously intentional."

I found your site through Google. So your information is not good alternative information?

Beware of blanket statements in the same way that you avoid miracle cures and singular culprits.

We don't think Google is pure evil, and yes we use it too. Sometimes it is (by intent) useless.

What we wrote about it is generally true. If you do enough research about alternative medicine, then you'll soon see the unmistakable pattern. Sites like ours have historically been categorically ranked lower than sites which make blanket statements claiming that alternative medicine is nothing other than quackery and fraud. In some cases, we've seen unpopular and cheesy Blogspot blogs being listed dramatically higher than us, and we're not the only ones being stepped on.

Check out this example, which was so clear that we had to make a mini-article about it: Don't Believe There Is A Health Conspiracy and Information Is Being Covered Up?

Every time we write about this topic, we have a few readers suggest that we are just being paranoid. If we had not spent over 8 hours a day, every day, researching and seeing it repeatedly happen for ourselves, then we might have trouble believing it too.

However, you don't have to take our word for it. Just ask some other leaders about their knowledge of search engine censorship and information manipulation. Ask Alex Jones, or Dr. Rebecca Carley, or Mike Adams, or Dr. Andrew Wakefield, or Dr. Russell Blaylock, or Dr. Joseph Mercola, or Dr. Sherri Tenpenny if we're being paranoid in even the slightest bit. We already know their answers.

Thanks for your extended reply. I have no doubt that there is, effectively, Internet censorship and lobbying going on. Moreover, although it was not clear in my first comment, I am one of the biggest advocates of alternative therapies and of getting the WHOLE picture rather than focusing in on the parts the way so much of the medical profession does.

My original comment was intended to help you NOT sound like so many other sites, both alternative AND medical, that make blanket statements, sound like religious fanatics, and are run for the sake of promoting the existence of conspiracies instead of actually being concerned with health and well-being.

All the best to you and your site. I will be reading more of your articles in the coming weeks.

I suffer from migraines on and off for more than 40 years. I have recently found out that I cannot eat any bell peppers, even a small piece less than 0.5 cm will trigger an attack within an hour. It does not matter if its cooked or raw.
Another trigger is some strong smelling flowers like jasmyn, honey suckle and lilies

There is a very good chance that you were exposed to red peppers with pesticides or other chemicals, which resulted in an unnatural sensitivity. This happens in the same way that vaccines trigger allergic reactions.

The allergies of eggs, latex, nuts, and etc that are rampant in our modern society result from vaccinations. When the body is exposed to a poisonous substance alongside one that is beneficial or benign, it may mistakenly associate the non-harmful substance as toxic. A similar situation almost certainly occurred with your allergies.

    Hi there,

I read your article and would like to share my experience about the power of using magnesium on migraines and other illnesses.

Magnesium is the MOST vulnerable mineral of all minerals because it involves in so many biochemical functions in our body and it doesn't take much to lose this precious mineral.

You can be stressed out, being angry, eating sugar, drinking tea/coffee or even listening to loud music can easily drain magnesium in no time.

Anyway, when I met my partner many years ago and I noticed she always have migraines, which was a result of drinking too much coffee, tea and using too much sodium in her food.

All that drained her magnesium and she would have eye twitching (eye spasms) because of the high level of calcium in her blood. That was proved by taking a sample of her hair and used the TMA (Tissue Mineral Analysis) by a respectable lab.

I suggested to her to take 300mg of magnesium citrate on an empty stomach in the morning, afternoon and before bed with a total of 900mg a day. She took it with vitamin c and b-complex at the same time, which enhanced bioavailability.

As soon as she started taking magnesium, her migraines stopped and her eye twitching stopped after two weeks of taking it.

I thought it was important for me to share what I have learned about the power of magnesium and what you have to say is absolutely right.

I would love to write articles for your site since I share the same views as yours. Please let me know if that is possible. :-)

    Cheers,

    Karl Roberts

    I cannot find "mag packs"
    Can you help me?

  • Thomas Corriher (Managing Editor)

You don't need a particular product. Any source of magnesium, including green vegetables, is good. A cap full (or two) of all-natural maple syrup will do in a pinch. You really need some calcium to make magnesium work, and calcium needs vitamin D to work best. So technically, you need:

    magnesium + calcium + vitamin D

As for your specific question, we are sorry about the confusion we caused by using the phrase "mag packs". It is a slang term that we internally use to refer to a specific product. We are normally very careful to avoid citing specific commercial products, but we apparently slipped-up, and we stepped into this one. It would be unfair to refuse to answer your question at this point, so we are going to violate our standard policy by citing the commercial product.

The product is: ' Ionic-Fizz Magnesium Plus'

We know that it is sold at Whole Foods. It can be a huge help if your diet is less than ideal, but eating your vegetables is still the superior approach.
